For Breast Cancer Awareness month, this week we sit down with Charlotte Martin, breast cancer survivor and advocate.
In October 2018, Charlotte was diagnosed with Stage 1 HER2 Breast Cancer at the age of 31. An extremely rare form of breast cancer, with a 1 in 10,000 chance of contraction at such a young age. Charlotte was able to detect it at an early stage, because she performed regular self breast exams. In the years leading up to her own diagnosis, her doctors had all declined to do mammogram checks, because she was quote “too young” and “healthy,” even though her own mother had suffered from Breast Cancer. What followed after her diagnosis was chemotherapy, IVF treatments, a double mastectomy -- and the large price tag and emotional toil that came with it all.
We are so grateful to Charlotte for sharing her own experience and fighting for women to have early checks, being your own health advocate, and honor breast cancer awareness month.
To learn more about Charlotte you can get in touch on Instagram at @liveloveandboobs

Stephanie Gives Winckler Discusses Rett Syndrome and Honoring her Daughter's Life
Wednesday Oct 21, 2020
Wednesday Oct 21, 2020
On today’s episode we have an inspiring and moving conversation with Stephanie Gives-Winckler, author, illustrator, and Rett Syndrome Awareness educator and advocate. Stephanie shares her journey of raising and losing her daughter, Tiffanie Nina Simone Hayes, due to complications with Rett Syndrome in 2011. She shares how mental health plays a part in raising a child born with a rare neurological disorder, and shares her hope-filled story with us today.
Stephanie is also the author of “The Best Girlfriends Ever,” inspired by Tiffanie’s own journey with Rett Syndrome. Stephanie wrote the book as a way to fill a void from Tiffanie’s passing and bring awareness to Rett Syndrome -- The plot of the book involves Tiffanie’s real life friends, accompanying Tiffanie on a summer adventure.
Rett Syndrome (RS) is a debilitating neurological disorder that predominantly affects females. It is the leading genetic cause of severe impairment in girls, brought on by a single gene mutation that leads to underproduction of an important brain protein. October is also Rett Syndrome Month. We are grateful to Stephanie for her courage and spirit. Enjoy the episode.

Today on the show we welcome the lovely and dynamic creator of the popular fashion blog The Fashion Lotus, Jeanelly Concepcion. The Fashion Lotus combines fashion with sustainability and wellness and Jeanelly strives to empower women to look and feel beautiful regardless of financial circumstances, body, age, or career path. In addition to running The Fashion Lotus, Jeanelly is also the Executive Editor at Style Lush TV and the VP of the Texas Fashion Industry Initiative.
While we do discuss sustainable fashion with Jeanelly, this episode focuses on a much more personal story of Jeanelly’s where she courageously shares with us her recent experience with pregnancy, miscarraige, loss, and the healing process. We really appreciate Jeanelly for so openly sharing her experience with the hope that more women who experience miscarriage will feel less alone in the process. We learned that the percentage of pregnancies that end in miscarriage is conisdered to be 10-15% if not higher. We loved having this conversation with Jeanelly and are very grateful to her for her openness and vulnerability.

Wednesday Sep 30, 2020
Wednesday Sep 30, 2020
Today on the podcast we have a conversation with, Courageous Wellness listener, Lilly Brice. Lilly recently graduated from Bucknell University as a sociology and anthropology major. A kentucky native, always drawn to cultural medicine, holistic health, and nutrition -- she spent 5 transformative months in New Zealand, conducting research on Māori culture, interviewing indigenous healers, and traveling to a healing Expo in the South Island. She wrote her honors thesis on Māori notions of holistic health and well-being -- which she shares with us today!
Drawing on contemporary anthropological approaches used by scholars of well-being and medical anthropology, Lilly, explores how indigenous healers in New Zealand blend “traditional” and “modern” elements to establish a creative and inclusive system. We discuss herbal treatments, ritual chanting, and ceremonies that encapsulate Māori cultural values and the impact of biomedicine and New-Age wellness approaches on indigenous healing. We are grateful to Lilly for sharing her own experience with the Courageous Wellness community today!
